I’m not sure I understand the question. Do you mean why is James Dean portrayed that way? Or do you mean what happened that made him that way.
The reason he is portrayed that way is because of the types of movies he was in, where he played a rebel. His most famous movie is, well, Rebel Without a Cause where he plays a, you guessed it, a rebel without any causes.
He has the cool Elvis hair, leather jacket, motorcycle, and gets all women and plenty of attitude.
He helped destroy the image of the white teen from being an uptight bookworm to a tough biker thug.
He also led a fast paced real life outside of the movies, ending with his death in a head on collision high speed Porsche accident at a relatively young age, as he had just completed his third movie and was going to become a mega superstar.
As it was he lives forever in legend as the quintesential American rebel icon.

People are ignorant and make up things when they don’t know the answer. If someone is different from you people assume the worst in many cases.
Not all rebels are loners. But all loners are by definition a rebel against society. Soceity doesn’t mind rebels, as long as they rebel within the framework of society.
So most people who consider themselves rebels aren’t really rebelling, but merely annoying the status quo.
To be a real loner requires an extreme sacrifice, something only reserved for dedicated monks, people in jail, people who have been mentally traumatized or other extreme conditions.
That’s why the true loner is admired, because the majority of people need friends and stuff and cannot understand why someone tortures themselves through isolation.
Besides a loner can be a good thing if the family or group they belong to is not righteous. That’s why James Deans characters worked, he was an outsider, a rebel, but he was fighting a corrupt soceity. The same sort of society we still live in. So who’s the real criminal?
Much like famous religious or scientific figures who stood (alone) against the ignorance and injustice of their times.
